19 September 2010 – Reunification Palace, Saigon
We almost didn't visit the Reunification Palace but very glad we did. This homage to 60s awesomeness has stood unused since the North Vietnamese tanks rolled in in 1975.
Looks like the South Vietnamese President was planning a new career running 'Motels & Motor Hotels' - probably wise.
19 September 2010 – Eating & Drinking
Coffee Vietnam style - a super strong robusta via a metal drip filter. The robusta they grow gives a really distinct hazel-nutty flavour to the brew and generally 'milk' = condensed milk so it makes for a fairly sweet experience. In the 35° heat it was best served black over ice.
On our last night in Saigon we ate at a fantastic restaurant called Quan An Ngon near the corner of Nam Ky Khoi Nghia and Pasteur. Beautiful setting in a colonial building with massive variety of good 'street-style' food cooked all around the edges of the dining room(s). It was the best Vietnamese we ate in a touristy venue.
The Vietnamese make good beer (bless 'em) and you can get it almost everywhere (bless 'em again).
This unassuming café opposite our hotel in Hanoi served up easily the best Phở gà (chicken noodle soup) we ate in Vietnam.
